HD RADIO  is on its' WAY ......... Revisited !!!  January  2006

 By Robert Lieto

HD RADIO or in its natural form Digital Radio. Not the subscription type but free. As we reported in October 2003 (HD Radio). The company iBiquity owns the HD radio technology and expect it to reach tens of thousands THIS year. According to the HD Radio Alliance, more than a dozen terrestrial radio companies are ready to begin transmitting HD2 multicast programming to markets with a total of 264 "entirely new" initially commercial-free HD channels carrying a variety of music or talk formats. New formats will include Viva La Voce (opera), Classical Alternative, Traditional Jazz & Blues, Coffee House, Female Talk, Future Country, Extreme Hip Hop, Fusion Hispanic-Anglo Rock, Chick Rock, New Alternative and others.

HD radio sidebands (10.7-Mhz) boost FM to CD quality and improve AM to FM-like quality. Receiver manufacturers are achieving it by pairing iBiquity's software with digital processing chips from TI and Philips.

Although it seems markets like New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Dallas-Fort Worth will be included within the launch also less obvious locales include Birmingham (Alabama), El Paso (Texas) and Wichita (Kansas), are included. For more information and a complete list, see Ibquity's Website.

Comment ..... Bring it on.
