HD VMD vs Blue Ray    March 2008

By Robert Lieto

Just as the dust has settled on the HD-DVD vs  Blue Ray format war with HD-DVD giving in to its rival Blue Ray, another format has emerged. The HD VMD, a format derived from a company known as New Medium Enterprises, is set to come onto the market and believes it has a chance of displacing the Bluer-Ray format.  The technology is described as robust and clearly equal in quality required, to deliver a true High Definition experience to the consumer at a price they are prepared to afford. It seems it is cheaper to produce and the hardware is less expensive by a lot. At this time the units are slated to be sold for $200 dollars compared to $300-$400 for Blue Ray players. It offers 10 GB of Hi-Def content and all it needs is studio support to catch Blue Ray. It is expected to be open to consumers in limited markets 2nd quarter 2008. But, according to The Blue-Ray Disc Association, the Blue-Ray disc stands alone and at this time has no equal and it (the VMD) is not seen as a significant threat.

Comment .....   I cannot imagine the Hi-Def market taking another turn without destroying the consumer confidence in the process. The HD-DVD and Blue-Ray format war went on for six (6) years without a clear winner until January 2008 when HD -DVD dropped out. I think this will further distance the average consumer from jumping in the Hi-Def disc market.
