    Pioneer's Blu-Ray Recorder  July  2008

    By Bob Lieto

Pioneer has developed a 400 GB storage Disc which amounts to a juiced-up Blu-Ray Disc. Reportedly a 16-layer, read only disc, capable of holding 25 GB per layer or 400 GB total and is compatible with current Blu-ray technology. The company focused in on the optical specifications of the objective lens on the current Blu-ray to maintain compatibility. Sony has stated in the past that Blu-ray could go up to eight or ten layers maximum because of weaken signals through multiple layers which is something that Pioneer has stated is solved. The Tokyo-based company presented the research details at the International Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage event held in Hawaii on July 13th.

The company went on to to state that they will sell Blu-Ray Disc Recorders in Japan beginning in March 2009. Global distribution plans were not disclosed. Sony Company., Panasonic Corporation, and Sharp control 98% market share for Blu-ray in Japan.

Comment .....   An optical recorder with a 400 GB capacity is definitely needed to match the extended capacity of today's' Hard Disc Drives for back-up.. Multiple HDDs stacked in the Tera-byte region require a large back-up medium for quick and easy storage.
